Recalling a few weeks in southern Saskatchewan. 2014 was a tough year.

My father and I took only a few photos of each other over the years. When I was old enough, he gave me his Kalimar, which he'd bought for his honeymoon, and told me "Go see." And I did—leaving behind my hometown, my country, my family. Over decades I returned only in glimpses; in grabs and fast frames. Lately, with his own shutter slowing, I visited my father more and more. Lawrence John Korchin passed away yesterday, at 86, and I'm just now starting to see what he meant.

Someone in my building brought her out to the trash, a 70s-ish objet that had languished in a living room for god knows how long, serving some need for decor or perhaps company. That's the City for you—toss out the cherished, bring out your dead.

Over the last several months, I’ve been returning to my hometown to take care of family—some of those images are here. But on the last trip (maybe the final one) I did not have my usual lens with me. It was a chance to use my mobile more. Saskatoon really is a lovely place, it’s just that, well, I was in a mood.
