Sandy Was Here / by David Korchin

Rabbit Lane sits very tightly on the northern shore of Peconic Bay at the end of Bay Avenue in East Marion, NY. The bay's freshwater cousin, Marion Lake, straddles two sides of that Avenue. Needless to say, there is water on all sides for the residents of homes in this bayside hamlet. When the storm surge from Sandy roared ashore October 29, 2012, the Bay and the Lake merged. The seawall barriers along the Bay snapped off their footings, and many residents sustained major damage. It took nearly a week for the waters to subside.
